We are well into the midst of summer 2022! The sun has been warming our cheeks and we have been spending more and more time outside!
Summer is one of our favorite seasons here at GSGLA for so many reasons! One reason, of course, is because it’s summer camp season! All our day and overnight camp sessions are back in full swing, and Girl Scouts from all over the county are joining back in the fun. There is so much to do at Girl Scouts Camp and even more fun activities you can do with your troop or family throughout your summer vacation!
Here are the top 5 activities on our bucket list this summer, and at the end, we’ll invite you to share your bucket list items with us! Happy Summer! ☀️
- Make New Friends, But Keep the Old
Summers can be a little bit tough because it’s a time when you don’t get to see your school friends too often, but it also happens to be a great time to reconnect with old friends you haven’t seen since last summer and even make a few new ones! Places like camps, local fairs, and summer programs are great areas to make new friends and build new connections. Challenge yourself this summer to be open to making at least one new friend!

- Sleep Under the Stars
You’ve heard of camping in tents and cabins before, but have you ever thought about camping under the stars? Whether it’s in your own backyard, at Camp Lakota, or at a California State Park, the summer is the best time to sleep al fresco! All you need is a tarp to place on the ground, your sleeping bag and pillow, and some of your best buds! For an extra bit of fun, try planning your night under the stars on an evening where there’s a visible meteor shower or full moon! The next full moon is on August 12, 2022!
- Try a New Hobby
During the school year, we hardly have any time to pick up new hobbies because we’re so busy with school work, after-school jobs, and extracurriculars! However, in the summer, our calendar is a little less full, which means there is more time to have some fun! Use some of this free time to explore a hobby you’ve always wanted to try. Perhaps it’s gardening, playing the harmonica, videography, or unicycling! Whatever it is, give it a go! And, if you need some inspiration searching for a new hobby to try, head on over to the Girl Scouts Award and Badge Explorer, and filter for your grade level and “Life Skills” topics to get some ideas!
- Visit a Local Museum
Summer can be fun and educational, especially when it means going to an iconic museum in Los Angeles with your friends or family! Whatever your interests are, we can almost guarantee there is a museum for it somewhere within Greater Los Angeles. Plus, visiting museums also happens to be a fun, free activity! Many museums are always free to the public (LACMA, Getty Villa), free on certain days (Natural History Museum, La Brea Tar Pits), or free with a Los Angeles Public Library Card (Grammy Museum, Los Angeles Zoo). - Enjoy the Great Outdoors!
One of the greatest joys of summer is spending more time outside than inside! And after years of being cooped up indoors, it feels so good to breathe in fresh air! This summer is all about getting out of the house and enjoying all mother nature has to offer. You can make a splash and cool off in Big Bear Lake, take a sunrise hike to beat the heat in Joshua Tree National Park, meet up with friends for a picnic at Los Angeles Historic Park, or get lost in the world of a new book while cozying up under the shade of a tree in your own backyard. The possibilities of what you can do outdoors are endless this summer, but always remember to leave no trace and leave the outdoors better than you found it.
